Peony season at Nicolettes

Here at the studio we are really lucky to be in close proximity to gorgeous florist Nicolette Camille. Every week Nicolette makes the early-bird trip to Chelsea Flower Market. She returns with a truck load of the seasons most incredible blooms, and we get to peak before they are arranged for her clients!

Inspired by Nicolette, WG florals for summer 2012

She also does a class called Little Flower school with fellow florist Sarah. The classes have a theme which changes with the seasons.

Poppy palette

The color orange has been showing up a lot lately in fashion/ interior forecasts and in all the 1970's palettes and styles around this season. This insane poppy is right on trend and brought to mind the delicate wings of a butterfly. The second image is from a favorite book of photographs by Jo Whaley called 'The Theater of Insects'.

The gorgeous red-head Jane, from Sea of shoes is an inspiration all of her own.

LA Inspiration! Part 1

We try to get at least one trip a year in to LA for inspiration. The amazing Thrift / vintage stores are the major draw and every second sunday of the month a huge antiques fair happens at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It's a textile designers dream, we always come away with tons of new ideas and a wish list of incredible mid-century furniture.

Also....Can't get enough of the palms, banana leaves and salty breeze mixed with june jasmine flowers.

A favorite thrifting treasure!

Orchid Extravaganza

This year the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens had an incredible orchid show.
Flowers are a constant source of inspiration in Textile Design and exotic, organic forms have been trending for the past few seasons so there were lush, tropical pictures to be had at the exhibition.

The picture in this photo called 'Orchid Jungle' is by amazing photographer Laurence Beck. It currently resides in the home of WG's friend (and equally awesome photographer), David Harry Stewart. So inspiring!

At the studio- Heat Transferable Dyes

Heat transfer printing is a fast, immediate and creative way of producing one-off textiles and one we use at the studio for sampling.

Step 1.
Heat responsive pigment powder is mixed with water and then used like an ink to paint.  The dyes adhere to synthetic fabrics only, which makes for cheap sampling! There are some great synthetics out there which work as close copies to natural fabrics.

Step2.
When the art work is dry it's ready to be pressed! The Heat Press we use is 16 x 24 inches. The Press temperature is set to 400 degrees, the fabric is laid onto the machine 'bed' and the paperwork put face down on top. The machine is then clamped down for about a minute or so.

A Print fresh out of the oven! The fabric is then ready to be fashioned.
